The European Regional Democracy Map

The impact of European integration on regional structures of government has been studied increasingly over the last decades, and changes to the EU treaties paid more attention to the role of European regions. However, there are still significant gaps in access to reliable and comprehensive information regarding the state of regional democracy and its role in EU multilevel governance – starting with the fact that there exists no overview of basic structures of regional democracy in Europe. In cooperation with Arjan Schakel and his team from the University of Bergen, REGIOPARL has developed an online map to visualise the diversity of subnational governance and democracy in Europe’s regions.
